Daddy loved to dance.  Ballroom dancing was his favorite! When he was single, he apparently taught most of the young women in Northeast Mississippi and Northwest Alabama how to dance…I hear stories from the ladies he taught. On the other hand, Mama had never even been to a dance when they married, let alone learned to dance herself. I was 2 or 3 when Mama decided that she would learn how to dance before the next summer when we would once again go with Daddy to the Mississippi Hospital Convention.  You see, on the last night of the convention there was always a fancy dress ball with lots of dancing….she intended to whirl around the floor with the best of them. Daddy was delighted!  After they put me to bed on weekends, they would push all of the furniture in the living room up against the walls to clear space for dance lessons.  Of course, I usually interrupted them at some point in time during the evening…but they never complained. By the next Hospital Convention, Mama had made such a wonderful dance partner that the other dancers cleared the floor just to watch them glide across the floor like Fred & Ginger! I recently dreamed about those dance lessons of long ago….

Lyrics

Last night I dreamed of childhood…Back in our little home I saw a warm light glowing…In our tiny living room I heard sweet music playing…And stumbled out of bed Tender voices called to me…This is what they said   Chorus Come dance with us our darling..Before the night is gone They picked me up and held me tight…In their loving arms We whirled around the old wood floor…Till I was fast asleep Waltzing in the living room…Mama...Daddy...and me   When our dance had ended…They lay me gently down I woke up this morning…To find they both were gone Thru tear dimmed eyes I smiled…As I lay there in my bed And recalled those nights of long ago…And the words they said Chorus Come dance with us our darling..Before the night is gone They picked me up and held me tight…In their loving arms We whirled around the old wood floor…Till I was fast asleep Waltzing in the living room…Mama...Daddy...and meWaltzing in the living room...Mama...Daddy...and me.
